Our first annual CHRISTMAS GATHERING at Murphy’s Inn was held on Saturday December 21, 2019. The spirit of the Christmas season was very much alive in this lively gathering of family and friends. An abundance of food, drink, laughter, conversation, live music and some dancing filled the inn. A great time was had by the many who could join us.

We look forward to our second annual CHRISTMAS GATHERING in 2020 and wish us all the best in the coming year!

On November 6th we had the honour of being interviewed by the Guysborough Journal (https://www.guysboroughjournal.com/index.php

The editor and owner of the Journal stopped by the inn with her daughter Katherine to meet with us for an article about us and our new inn. We are very happy with the final product and want to share it.

The Grand Opening was great fun with many folks stopping by to say hello and look around the inn. Lots of refreshments were available. We were especially pleased to welcome Sister Florence MacKenzie and Sister Alma MacLennan. They were the last two nuns to occupy this house when it was still a convent back in 2006. They had lots of memories to share. Some of our other visitors had memories to share as well. Memories of their childhood schooldays with the nuns who taught in Larry's River and Charlos Cove and memories of visits to this house when it was a convent. Lots of stories of local history and its residents.

Thank you to all who were able to make it to the opening and helped make it a success ! - Mary and Bob

Murphy’s Inn

Murphy’s Inn is housed in a classic American Four-Square wooden structure built about 1915. For fifty years (1955-2006) this house was occupied by the Sisters of the Congregation of Notre Dame and became the Mount Carmel Convent. Although a few short-term residents occupied the house since its construction, the Sisters were clearly the most prominent tenants.

We believe that we have been able to bring this beautiful house back to its original and intended elegance.

A Brief History of Ownership: Our current understanding is that prior to 1928 the house was owned by Benjamin and Mary Alice Gerrior (spelled Girior on deed). In December of 1928 they sold the house to Benjamin Avery, formally of Larry's River but then living in Cambridge, Massachusetts. His intent was to retire and move back home and live there. He never did get to live in it. We do know that he wanted another family member to move in with him but none were interested. It sat unoccupied for a many years.

In March of 1938 Benjamin Avery sold the house to William and Jennie Murphy. As far as we know, they did not live in the house either but it remained with the Murphy family of Larry's River.
