New blog post on feudal Manor houses in North America. As you may have guessed, top spot is the Seigneury of Port Royal - about 20 years before the first Quebec Seigneury. The Seigneury of Port Royal lasted from 1604 to 1734.

New gas inserts being installed in the old fireplaces. The one on the kitchen is big enough to get lost in.
There were no dampers, each one opens up to the sky.

Cleaning the lock on the Bailey House front door. None of these keys work and it looks like it was last repaired for Suzanne Halliburton in 1958.

Nahum Tate watching over the Christmas presents at the Bailey House, Annapolis Royal, Nova Scotia. Nahum Tate wrote the first authorised Christmas carol, “While Shepherds Watched” around 1700. This Christmas, the Bailey House has the only known oil painting of Nahum Tate, author of this iconic Christmas carol.

The new sign is up! A very difficult decision on what date to put on the sign. The main house dates from between 1770 to 1820, but…
…the back part of its foundation probably dates from around 1688, and there was a building on the property well before that, so…
… we are going with 1610, the earliest possible date there was a building on the property and the year that Seigneur Jean de Poutrincourt came back to Port Royal to revitalise the settlement that he left in 1607. At the Bailey House, we celebrate the entire history of Acadia and Nova Scotia, from its origins in the 1600s through to the present day.

We weren’t sure if our 170 year old barometer was still working properly, but it seems to be OK. A very blue sky and high presssure in Annapolis Royal today.

This is what happens when you start digging in the garden of a neighbourhood that’s been here since 1610. I have no idea how old most of these are, but the clay pipe fragment is probably 1600s to early 1700s. I was surprised to find an oyster shell, but probably should not have been.
