Happy Bike to Work Day, Calgary! 🚴♂️
Is your bike coming out of hibernation? Here are three simple steps to prep it for the ride:
1️⃣ Check Tire Pressure: Give those tires a squeeze - if they’re as soft as marshmallows, grab your pump! The “right” pressure provides cushion and grip but is also firm enough to roll quickly and help prevent flats.
2️⃣ Clean & Lubricate the Chain: Spin your chain backward through an old towel to clean it. Then, apply a thin layer of lube, spin again, and wipe off flushed-out grit and excess lube.
3️⃣ Inspect Brakes: Make sure your brake pads are aligned and not too worn. Well-adjusted brakes feel smooth at the lever, and travel about halfway to the handlebar grip. Adjust if necessary.
Where will you be pedalling first this spring? 🌸

Proper Layering can make or break your winter ride! 🚴♂️❄️
Here’s some layering basics:
1️⃣ Start with a Base Layer: This layer keeps your skin dry by wicking away sweat and regulating your body temperature. Choose synthetic fabrics or merino wool blends.
2️⃣Mid/Warm layer: This layer keeps the heat in. Choose fabric thickness depending on outside temperatures and how warm you run. Polyester or merino wool are preferable.
Alternatively, choose a lightweight jacket with an insulated lining.
3️⃣External Layer: This layer protects you from the elements. Typically a jacket or shell that blocks the wind, snow, rain or cold.
On warmer/non windy days, wear a base layer and a mid layer, but keep a shell in your bag.
4️⃣Pants: Start with a base layer like synthetic long johns, leggings or thin joggers. Pack or wear an external “shell” like fleece lined pants, rain pants or wind/water resistant cycling pants.
Consider flexibility, choose fabrics with elasticity.
5️⃣Hands & Feet:
Double up your socks or put on toe warmers for longer rides.
Consider lightweight hiking boots or trail runners that offer fleece lining or weather seals. This will help prevent your toes from freezing.
Try different gloves, hand warmers and bar mitts. View our recent story highlight for more information on keeping your hands warm.
Summary: 🚴♂️✨
👉Opt for a sweat wicking baselayer, a warm/mid layer and weatherproof layer.
👉Don’t neglect your hands and feet!
👉Pack extra clothing in case you sweat through your base layer or your external layer becomes wet.
